Lost and Found

If you Lost an Animal:

Please follow these steps:
  1. Call the shelter at (406) 222-2111 to report that your pet is missing. Do not wait a few days and see if the pet shows up first. After 3 days at the shelter, the animal becomes the property of HSPC and will be evaluated for adoption. Adoptions are final. New adopters of unclaimed strays will not be contacted to return a pet if the original owner shows up. As a general rule, once your pet has been missing overnight, please call the shelter as soon as possible.

  2. Go to the shelter and look at all the animals. It is not possible in many cases to confirm a pet's identity over the phone. Please advise a staff member as to the purpose of your visit because sick or injured strays might be at an off site veterinary clinic. If we do not have your pet, make sure you fill out a lost pet report at the desk. Please bring us a picture of your pet. We will notify you as soon as anyone calls or brings in any possible match. After your initial visit, we recommend shelter visits two to three times a week in order to view all strays received. Be patient and don't give up too soon!

  3. Call the Enterprise at 222-2000 to place a LOST PET classified ad. Also call KPRK at 222-1340 and they will announce your lost pet on the air.

  4. Post pictures of you pet at convenience stores, on telephone poles, and in grocery stores near the location your animal was lost. We encourage you to check with us twice a week if your pet is still missing. Our voice mail is on during the evening for your convenience or you may email us via this site. Please give both the pet's name and your name when you call or write. We keep lost pets on our active list for 3 months. We will keep the pet on the active list even longer if you request.

Please notify us when your pet is found. Get an I.D. for your pet and keep the information current. They can be purchased at the Shelter. Consider having your pet micro chipped for a permanent I.D.. that can’t be lost. All stray animals at the shelter are scanned for microchips. Although a rabies tag is important, the vet clinic might be closed and we won't be able to access information from the tag until the following working day. Check for any escape routes if there is a fence involved. Make sure the dog has "busy toys" if you are gone for any length of time and that he gets sufficient time and exercise with you. We have names of wonderful trainers who can help you.

And remember, you can always call us at the shelter for further assistance.

If you found an animal:

Follow these instructions:
  1. If possible, provide a safe, secure place for the animal to be while you contact the owners, police, animal control, and the shelter. You can also email this site. If you leave a message on the shelter voice mail, be sure to tell us how to reach you. Speak slowly and clearly. Do not wait a few days to see if the animal finds it way home, as it is at risk and could get hurt or killed. Please don't hang up without leaving your "found" report as the owner might be the next call we receive and we won't be able to contact you.

  2. If the animal is found within city limits, you may call city animal control to have them pick up the animal and bring it to the shelter. The animal control number is 223-2197, ext 1210 or 223-0179. You may bring the animal to the shelter yourself during our business hours of 11-5 Tues.-Sat. If you have a way to contain the animal and want to keep it at your house to foster, we will take a "found" report. After calling us, call the Enterprise at 222-2000 and place an ad with the Classified Department. Local radio stations are also a big help in this matter. Found pet postings at convenience stores, on telephones, and in grocery stores are quite successful.

If you find the pet's owner, please let us know.

Good luck! If we can assist in any way, please call at (406) 222-2111.
