5/17/2012 [12-Sarge] Sarge
Miniature Pinscher, black/tan, Male neutered, 2 Yr
STRAY:
My name is Sarge and I love to bark orders...especially to cats! I am a very small and cute little man, approx. 10 lbs. of canine "boy toy" and approx. 2 years young. I am very curious about cats and like to follow them around if they are inside but I thoroughly enjoy barking at them if they are outside! I get along great with other dogs and like me the human ladies better than them men folk (although they are OK). I LOVE to go for walks and am very handsome on my leash, if I do say so myself! Unfortunately, I was a stray and my family never looked for me ... although I cannot speak, my foster mom is figuring out that I have gone through some hard times. She thinks that maybe someone was a little heavy handed with me and my ear crop "job" is a mess! With all of this love and attention, my personality is changing quickly so the humans are still trying to figure me out ... but I would prefer a quiet home probably best without cats. I am not that fond of young children but do OK with older kids. I really want a place of my own that I can feel safe in. I am a complete couch potato and would love to sit on a chair and look outside all day. I am still working on my potty training but learning quickly. I came to the RHS with a bad bite wound on my back hind leg that has healed well - I am not telling what THAT was all about. Sometimes I growl a little when picked up but I have never ventured to bite - I am kinda sore and am worried someone is going to hurt me again. However, I do love to be held and will hang out with you as long as you will let me. My favorite place to sleep is under the covers at night and I will snore until you say it's time for breakfast. I am neutered, micro chipped, up to date on shots and heartworm negative. If you are looking for a handsome, military type of guy, I will certainly bark my approval!
3/19/2012 [12-Katie] Katie
Treeing Walker Coonhound, tri - black/brown/white, Female spayed, 6 yrs.
OWNER TURN IN: Dear, sweet Katie went out on a test drive for a week or two but has come back into our program. It seems the kitties of the house went on an outright protest having a dog in the home. Between soiling outside the litter box and hiding where no one could find them, the family thought it best to restore harmony and bring Katie back. The silver lining here is that the family reports that Katie is an absolutely fantastic dog (we had no doubts) ... they said "Katie is a great dog. She loves to be loved. She loves to sleep in the bed or on the couch. She really does not bark. She adores attention. She listen wells. She is a happy dog. Never caused any problems. She ended up being good with our cats. She tried to play with them at first but then understood they were not a toy. She sleeps tons! She leads well. She sleeps all night long. In my opinion she would be best with someone who was home with her most of the day for she loves people!" Katie originally came from a breeder in southern Colorado and was purchased as a 3 year old by a gentleman in Billings who wanted a female hunting dog (she is UKC registered). Having two other male Walker hounds, he felt Katie would be a nice compliment to his "pack". As you can see in some of the pictures, Katie has a "D" freeze branded on her left side - this is common practice amongst coonhound hunters so they can identify their dog amongst the large packs when they are hunting. Problem is ... Katie just wants to be a love sponge with her human and when she is being hunted, she would much rather pursue skunks and porcupine instead of the "coon" she should be going after. Although Katie's owner adores her, he feels she would be happiest in a home where she can be the "pet" that she truly wants to be ... loved, adored and spoiled. Obviously, hunting is not something that will remain on her "resume". This girl is extremely affectionate and very loving ... if you are not petting her, she will place her paw on you to make sure you understand she is there for you to rub, scratch and pet her! She gets along well with other dogs but has been known to play rough (she has two Walker hound brothers - she is used to hangin' with the boys!). She has been around small dogs and cats and seems to be a OK with them. Katie is housebroke, spayed, up to date on shots and microchipped ... as with all breeds, we highly recommend that a potential owner brush up on the characteristics of a Treeing Walker Coonhound at such links like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treeing_Walker_Coonhound - Katie is an adorable girl who deserves the attention of a family who will treat her like a beloved companion and life long friend.
3/6/2012 [12-Greta] Greta
Pit Bull Terrier X, brindle, Female, 1 Yr
OWNER TURN IN: Barely a year old herself, sweet Greta has already raised a litter of pups .. yup, bred her very first heat cycle; living in poor conditions and to top it all off; her puppies were yanked from her when they were only 5 weeks old (given away for free). Then, the owner did not want her anymore and turned her in to us. Her story just broke our hearts! Being a baby herself, to see Greta so thin with her long teats - no young dog should have to go through this! We believe it was Greta's lucky day to have crossed the RHS doorstep - boy, is her life a-changing! We do see some Pit Bull in her features but Greta is really fine boned and came to us only weighing 38# ...she is putting on weight but we cannot pinpoint what her "mix" might be. For such a crappy beginning in her life, she is proving to be an absolute sweetheart! She LOVES people and follows her foster mom around the house like a shadow ... very much a cuddler and adores giving kisses! Greta is slowly coming out of her shell and has started playing with the other dogs in the foster home ... she is now doing play bows and gets her foster sister to chase her; having a blast together! So much fun to see Greta learn to just be a dog! She is now an incredibly happy dog with a tail that wags continually! Although she can be playful ... Greta is mostly mellow. If you just want to chill and watch TV, she will be at your side and very non-demanding. This girl gets along great with all of the dogs in the foster home - she is not a dominant dog but not overly submissive either so more "middle of the pack". Greta shows a lot of interest in the cats in the home and the neighbors cat in the yard - she has not gone after one but the foster mom is very vigilant. With that in mind, we would have to say that she would do best in a home without kitties. Greta was raised with kids so she should be OK with older children who are respectful. Housebroke, crate trained, soon to be spayed, up to date on shots and microchipped -- here is an incredibly sweet girl who SO deserves a second chance in life. You have to meet her in person to appreciate her kind and loving demeanor!
2/15/2012 [12-Taka] Taka
Akita, gray/black/white, Female spayed, 5 yrs.
OWNER TURN IN: What an absolutely beautiful girl this is! Taka has the most expressive face ... there are "worry" wrinkles near her brow and when she looks at you with those eyes, it almost seems as if she is seeing into your soul! Taka's owners adopted her from the local shelter 4 years ago and thought they would be moving from their condo to a new home with a fenced yard. So far, that has not happened and keeping Taka exercised continues to be a challenge for them. This girl is Akita through and through and follows the breed temperament to a tee ... very cat like in her manner, protective, devoted, and extremely affectionate with her "pack". As is the case with this breed, they were not bred to be in "packs" but instead were expected to work alone or in pairs. Akita's are a very strong and independent breed and Taka has proven that she does not do well with other dogs or cats. In fact, she has gotten away from her owners on a few occasions and has killed two kitties. Indoors, she is the PERFECT dog ... incredibly respectful, never barks, will lay down on her bed when you point to it and say, "Bed". She is a very quick learner and accepts training readily. Taka gets baths frequently but prefers a "shower" instead. She has always been an "only" dog and shows dominance and some mild aggression when meeting other dogs - Taka also has not been around children much at all. One of Taka's favorite past times is hiking - she carries her own packs (which will go with her to her new home) and loves to explore the wilderness with her human. She also loves to pull her owner on her roller blades which is great exercise for her and helps keep her fit. Taka has had some professional training with a certified trainer and will come to her new home with her crate, dog bed, dog bowls and back packs. Spayed, up to date on shots and microchipped -- Taka requires a "special" home ... we will not make any exceptions. Her new home has to be "Akita-wise" and know this breed in and out. The new home will be dedicated to continuing her training and have no other pets in the house. If you feel you meet this criteria, then please contact us and let's get Taka into a new forever home that will understand her and allow her Akita traits to flourish!
2/5/2012 [12-Danford] Danford
Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier X, black/brown/white, Male neutered, 6 Mo
OWNER TURN IN: Oooooie ... now THAT is handsome! Danford originally came to us as a stray back in December and we found him a home almost immediately. Unfortunately, the older dog in the home wasn't too keen on having a puppy like Danford in the house, so he came back into the RHS fold looking for a new forever home. This boy is one hunk of burning love ... 6 mos. old and already pushing 50 lbs., Danford will not be a small dog by any means. Our foster home calls him a "goober" and they mean that in the most loving way. Lots of energy, tons of personality and 100% pure puppy all the way! One thing they love most about Danford is that he listens well and truly wants to please (particularly for a young pup) -- what a great fella to train! He also will calm down without too much trouble if asked to by his owner. Danford LOVES to play with other dogs ... his favorite in the foster home is Annie the Hound. He needs to be matched up with another energetic dog like himself; older dogs might tire of his puppy antics. Danford is really good with the cats in the foster home - pretty much ignores them. Being a pup, he does like to chew but does well when directed toward doggy chew appropriate toys - if left unattended and to his own vices, we feel he might get into trouble with chewing items NOT designated as "his". When playing, he also likes to give what we call "flea nibbles" on your arm and does have a habit of wanting to jump on you ... our foster home is working on this. Due to his exuberance and propensity for jumping, we do recommend a home with children 10 and over - no toddlers. Digs belly rubs and likes to snuggle! Housebroke, crate trained, up to date on shots and microchipped -- this boy has a warm, loving heart and will make a super addition to that lucky perfect family!
